AIO promotes a deeper understanding of Indigenous peoples by bringing together diverse groups,  initiating dynamic discussion on a wide variety of issues, and by sharing information and resources.

AIO frequently attends forums around the globe. In June 2008, AIO went to Japan to the International Indigenous Peoples Summit in Ainu Mosir (Hokkaido, Japan). In November 2008, AIO with the Advancement of Maori Opportunity (AMO) went to Bolivia to an international Indigenous peoples conference and engaged in cultural exchanges with Indigenous communities across the country. Then in December 2008, AIO was in Australia for the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE).

AIO also hosts visiting international groups, including Fulbright Scholars, and acts as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of various types of information and referrals. AIO’s resource foundation is a database of more than 9,000 records on tribes, organizations, agencies, and individuals.
